As
I enter the forest outside my door, the morning sun is at an oblique angle
lighting red-gold puzzle-like bark on the pine trees. They pop out against
the gray green duff of bitterbrush and bunchgrass. The dark green, elegantly
long needles of the pines are in stark contrast to the brilliantly blue
Central Oregon sky. A vibrant picture of color, texture, patterns and
smells creates the backdrop for my morning walks.
These are the origins of my artistic ‘process’ as I enter a reverie where place and time blur, emerging from a thought process while unsure of my whereabouts. I approach life and art in simple terms. We are here for such a short period of time it doesn’t seem worth complicating our lives. Continuing along as the sun warms my being I reflect on the web of energy that ties our spirits to each other and the world around us. I truly believe that we are all connected. My art reflects a primeval, organic and natural state, from the raw clay to the salt fire incorporating lava, sand from the Oregon Coast and earth from fossil beds in this magical region we call Oregon. Totem Women, the 3 Sisters Series, Adinkra Shields, playful fish: all spawned out a need to create, they serve as guideposts and touchstones for where I am in my life, propelling me on to unknown directions. Totem Women, full of animal symbology, connect us to Mother Earth, reminding us to heed our path in life. Indeed, we have the power to move in positive directions, especially when gently reminded of where those directions lie. The animal faces of the masks and necklaces represent different animal spirits and offer us messages to help guide us along our life’s path. As an artist, the greatest satisfaction comes from
knowing I have impacted someone on a spiritual level, making a small
impression and a positive impact on his or her own vibrations. A conduit
tying my energy to others, my art is a message of hope and joy to the
world, waiting to be heard. |
